The numerical modeling of lava dome evolution at volcán de Colima using VOF and SPH methods

چکیده

Lava flows from extrusive volcanic eruptions can have catastrophic consequences both for human life and the environment. Modeling such situations is an important scientific problem. The main driving forces in evolution of mentioned lava are gravitational forces, viscous friction on surface spill, processes crystallization molten rocks into plateau, tubes, domes. In this paper, mathematical model eruption includes Navier–Stokes equation, incompressibility phase transfer as well corresponding initial boundary conditions. Mathematical models considered compared within Euler (Volume Of Fluid – VOF) Lagrange (Smooth Particle Hydrodynamic SPH) formulations. ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, SPlisHSPlasH packages were used computer simulation. Computer simulation algorithms problem implemented C++ language. Numerical modeling a real dome formed at Colima volcano (Mexico) February–March 2013 was carried out. For experiment, information about dynamics growth, collected during eruption, used. It shown how approach makes it possible to establish dependence morphology rheology highly fluid intensity outflow.

Identification of structural controls in an active lava dome with high resolution DEMs: Volcán de Colima, Mexico

[1] Monitoring the topography of active lava domes is critical for detecting changes that may trigger or influence collapse or explosive activity. Internal dome structure and conditions are more difficult to elucidate, but also play vital roles. Here, we describe the exposure (following an explosion) of significant scarps in the active dome at Volcán de Colima, Mexico, that are interpreted as e...

Blowing Off Steam: Tuffisite Formation As a Regulator for Lava Dome Eruptions

Tuffisites are veins of variably sintered, pyroclastic particles that form in conduits and lava domes as a result of localized fragmentation events during gas-and-ash explosions. Those observed in-situ on the active 2012 lava dome of Volcán de Colima range from voids with intra-clasts showing little movement and interpreted to be failure-nuclei, to sub-parallel lenses of sintered granular aggre...

Temporal trends in lava dome extrusion at Santiaguito 1922 – 2000

We present a means of extracting lava dome extrusion rates from data provided by the Thematic Mapper and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus instruments flown on the Landsat satellites. Extrusion rates derived from the Landsat data for Santiaguito dome complex (Guatemala) during November 1987 and January 2000 of 0.72€0.08 and 0.48€0.09 m3 s–1 compare favorably with ground-based estimates of 0.63€0.28...
